Happy New Year 2012

Category: EventsChristine @ 1:08 am

Another year gone, and the start of yet another new one!

Fab NYE party at Dawn & Paul C’s, involving far too much food (yum), a touch too much drink, far too much sleep, and of course sherry trifle for breakfast for some of those who stayed over!!  Amazing how popular the mini casino was with the kids, particularly the roulette!  Also gobsmacked when Dawn P (who apparently has never played before) managed to almost bankrupt the game on her first go by getting a direct hit on a number.  Must think about investing in some more chips for next year!

So, whats coming up?  Well the latest programme has finally been uploaded (sorry for the delay), we have our own AGM, and the National AGM coming up, so thats the business side of things, and plenty of plans for the coming year, some camping, crabs and lobsters, our summer party, probably some steam trains somewhere, and most probably meals out too – maybe I’ll even resurrect the Scalextric even this year – there is a weekend visit to Banham Zoo being planned too, this time in a mobile home for those who book early, although it’s a particularly good campsite anyway.

So, lots to look forward to, and a great year coming up – watch this space!!  Who knows, maybe I’ll even get around to sorting out the photos page……but lets take things one step at a time!

Weekend Mayhem

Category: Eventskingslynnplus @ 11:22 pm

Well its been a bit quiet on here for a while, sorry about that, but we’ve been busier than ever doing stuff!

Two weekends away in a row, both with perfect weather – who would have expected that this time of year?

First we camped for the weekend at Banham Zoo, we didn’t visit the zoo but did go to Bressingham Steam Museum for the day – most of us hadn’t been before, and thoroughly enjoyed all the steam train rides, and of course the gallopers built by Savages of King’s Lynn. The day before we were lucky enough to get a boat big enough to take all 10 of us and spent three hours on the Norfolk Broads, making it from Wroxham to Coltishall, where some of us had a quick bite to eat and a drink, and back – taking it in turns to drive.

Then last weekend we camped out in a pub garden, visiting a night-time event at the Maze in Maize at Whaplode – scary going around the maze in darkness with various people jumping out of the corn at you occasionally, even if they were actually trying to scare someone else at the time (oops, sorry – wrong people!!). A few went in fancy dress, and most of us sampled the BBQ food that was being sold, before heading back to the pub for a few drinks before bedtime. Sunday lunch the next day was very enjoyable and followed by a trip to Springfields in Spalding for some retail therapy, and just general lazing about in the deckchairs on the lawn!

All this having fun and taking it easy is rather tiring……

Palm Paper/Summer Party/Ideas

Category: EventsChristine @ 2:11 pm

Next week’s meeting is programme planning time – this is where everyone gets a chance to suggest things they would like to do/see on the programme from July to October.  Some ideas already suggested are a guided town walk, a visit to Bressingham Steam Museum (possibly with camping) and a night at the Peterborough Greyhound Track.

On 14th July, the night that we had planned to visit Palm Paper, we will now be having an open meeting to discuss/organise the summer party.  The main parts have already been done by the committee, but its time to get down to the detail, so anyone who wants any input and is willing to help out over the party weekend is invited to come and take part in the discussions.  Venue TBA.

Boules!

Category: EventsChristine @ 10:22 am

…or Petanque to give it its posh name!

The “TBA” on the programme for Tuesday 31st May is now an evening at Sandringham to play Petanque in the grounds, or any other outdoor games anyone might fancy.  To be followed by a few refreshments in a local pub, either the Feathers at Dersingham, or the Rose & Crown at Snettisham possibly.

Earlier meeting time again, 7.30pm to make the most of the daylight.

Programme Change, and Town Trail

Category: EventsChristine @ 11:51 pm

Firstly the Town Trail, pretty much a treasure hunt around town…minus the car!

Meeting at 7.30 at the Crown & Mitre, much earlier than usual but we want to get most of the treasure hunt done in daylight – and time to socialise afterwards too.

Now to the programme change…..Unfortunately Palm Paper aren’t keen on showing members of the public at the moment…so we are hoping to re-arrange this for some time in the future.  At the moment we will be meeting at the pub on that date, I’ll advise any other change as or when it happens.

Carry On Camping?

Category: EventsChristine @ 11:47 pm

Hopefully this weekend will be less eventful that the Carry On film!  We are off to Kelling Heath in North Norfolk for a couple of nights – taking in the Cromer & Sheringham Crab & Lobster festival over the weekend too.  Most arrive Friday evening, and on Saturday its off to the station to catch a steam train on the “Poppy Line”, the North Norfolk Railway.  This will take us to and from Sheringham and Holt, with some time in Sheringham for lunch, shopping, beer festival etc….

A meal out on Saturday night, and one more night’s camping before leaving Sunday afternoon.

Hope the weather stays good!

National Activity – Food Hygiene Course

Category: EventsChristine @ 1:49 pm

In March, The National Federation of Plus Areas (“National”)  offered an opportunity to members to obtain a CIEH Level Two in Food Hygiene. This is an industry standard qualification that enables the successful participants to work in food services, catering and manufacturing.   For Plus members as event organisers it enables them to prepare food; to run food stalls and serve freshly cooked food at public events such as carnivals, fairs, barbecues etc.

Francis Wallington, the course leader and a Vice-President of  Plus, has been delivering this course and qualification for twenty years to colleagues involved in food processing from shop floor worker to director.   National subsidised the cost to Plus members.  It was well attended (in fact, fully booked) and we are very much hoping that following the success of this event, Francis will consider running another some time in the future.

Just one of the diverse opportunities open to Plus members from time to time!!

All change (pt 2)

Category: EventsChristine @ 11:23 pm

Another fairly major change is about to take place – the meeting night will change from Mondays to Tuesdays from 22nd March onwards.

We used to meet on Tuesdays years ago, before the pub started closing Tuesday nights. That no longer happens, and so after discussion we decided that Tuesday nights would suit people better. Hopefully that will mean better regular attendance, particularly after weekend events, and we will lose fewer nights to bank holidays too.

So if you plan on visiting us after the middle of March, remember to come on a Tuesday! Now we have made this decision we can go ahead and publish the new programme, which should follow shortly.

Also keep an eye out for details of our New Members Night planned for 29th March – more details to follow.
